Energy is one of those things that people are constantly searching for and trying to obtain. Many people wake up feeling tired and groggy. To compensate for that, coffee and soda are consumed. In reality, this is only making the situation worse. It becomes a vicious cycle. A person has energy for a little while due to the caffeine and sugar and once that wears off, fatigue kicks in again and the cycle starts all over.
So what are some of the reasons why people struggle with fatigue or low energy?
- Dehydration-many people are not consuming the recommended amount of water each day. Your body is made up of mostly water and so needs quite a bit to function optimally. According to those in the nutrition/health industry it is recommended to drink 8- 8oz glasses a day as an adult. Now this is just a recommendation because it depends on your body and your activity level. If you are sick, you will need more, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, actively sweating, you will need more. So even if you are a little dehydrated, you can deal with low energy.
- Another big reason is your adrenal glands are fatigued or are not working as they should. Stress is something that affects everyone. Good or bad stress, it still plays a part. If you are under chronic stress, your body is in constant “fight or flight” mode and eventually your adrenal glands are overworked and can’t produce the necessary hormones to keep up.
- The last one that I will touch on is too much sugar consumption. If too much refined sugar is eaten especially without pairing it with a protein or fat, your blood sugar will spike giving you energy for a little bit, but then will plummet after it wears off leaving you feeling tired. This occurs also if too much time goes by between eating. Keeping your blood sugar at a steady level is key.
So what are some natural ways to help with energy?
There are several herbs and supplements that can help get your adrenal glands functioning as they should. They include: Licorice, Ashwagandha, Eleuthero, Astragalus, and Schisandra just to name a few. These can be taken together in a tonic. We also offer supplements in the office that work directly on the adrenal glands to help them produce hormones like they should.
Increasing water intake is very important as well as eating a balanced diet and getting enough sleep. Please make an appointment with me and we can work together and see why you have low energy and devise a plan to help you not deal with it anymore.
